Throughout August, Film4 presents two mini seasons celebrating the art of Studio Ghibli.

Part one: Thursday 1st - Friday 9th August 2013

To celebrate From Up On Poppy Hill, a new story from Studio Ghibli, Film4 returns to their world of life-changing magic, romance and fantasy, beginning with the UK TV premiere of My Neighbours The Yamadas.

Thursday 1st August

    Adapted from a popular four-panel newspaper comic strip, My Neighbours The Yamadas sketches out the life of a normal Japanese family across a series of whimsical vignettes. (Japanese language, subtitled)

Friday 2nd August

  • Ocean Waves

    11am - Ocean Waves

    After spotting an old flame in a crowded railway station, a young man reminisces about their time in high school together. (Japanese language, subtitled)

  • Film4 Arrietty

    11am - Arrietty

    Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki sprinkle their inimitable fairy dust over Mary Norton's classic children's tale of a family of little people who live by secretly 'borrowing' from their unsuspecting human neighbours. (English language)

Monday 5th August

  • Ponyo

    11am - Ponyo

    As a tsunami looms, a young boy makes friends with a magical fish who wants to become a human girl. (English language)

Tuesday 6th August

  • Whisper Of The Heart

    11am - Whisper Of The Heart

    Animated tale of teenage uncertainty, aspiration and love from Studio Ghibli, written by Hayao Miyazaki and directed by his protege Yoshifumi Kondo. (English language)

    1.45am - My Neighbours The Yamadas

    A teenager saves a cat from traffic, only to discover he's a prince from a magical feline kingdom. (English language)

    11am - Only Yesterday

    An independent-minded office worker reflects on her formative years in 1960s Tokyo in this coming-of-age tale from Isao Takahata. (Japanese language, subtitled)

Friday 9th August

  • Kiki's Delivery Service

    11am - Kiki's Delivery Service

    As she turns thirteen, a young witch leaves home on her broomstick as tradition dictates and ends up running a delivery service out of a bakery in a picturesque coastal city. (English language)

Part two: Sunday 25th August - Monday 2nd September

A fantastical journey through the Japanese studio's more magical, otherworldly creations, which encompass science fiction, fairytale, mythology and epic adventure, all bearing that inimitable Ghibli touch.

  • Porco Rosso

    11am - Porco Rosso

    Hayao Miyazaki's sixth feature film tells of the adventures of the titular 'crimson pig', a heroic flying ace in the Adriatic in the years after the First World War. (English language)

Tuesday 27th August

    11am - Spirited Away

    A young girl finds herself trapped in a mystical realm, where she must find a way to save her parents - who have been turned into pigs. (English language)

Wednesday 28th August

  • Princess Mononoke

    11am - Princess Mononoke

    A young warrior prince gets involved in the conflict between magical beasts and ruthlessly progressive humans in this mature, complex, epic anime from Hayao Miyazaki. (English language)

  • Pom Poko

    11am - Pom Poko

    Magical raccoon dogs want to stop humans from developing their woodland habitat. Classic anime parable by Isao Takahata. (English language)

  • Howl's Moving Castle

    4.30pm - Howl's Moving Castle

    The tale of an industrious young milliner magically transformed into an old woman and her involvement with the household of a dashing wizard. (English language)

Sunday 1st September

  • Castle In The Sky

    4.45pm - Castle In The Sky

    An orphaned boy and girl go in search of the mysterious floating kingdom of Laputa in this engaging animated feature from Hayao Miyazaki. (English language)

Monday 2nd September

  • Tales From Earthsea

    11am - Tales From Earthsea

    Fantasy anime loosely adapted from the works of Ursula K LeGuin. The directing debut of Goro Miyazaki, son of the Ghibli master Hayao Miyazaki. (English language)
