Trespass Against Us

Film4

Synopsis

Brendan Gleeson and Michael Fassbender star as father and son in a family of outlaws. As the law closes in, Fassbender's Chad must decide between loyalty to his father or a better life for his children.

About

Three generations of the notorious Cutler family live as outlaws in the British countryside, practising their own way of life—poaching, pilfering and provoking the police. Chad (Michael Fassbender) finds himself torn between respect for his father, Colby (Brendan Gleeson), and the need to provide a better life for his children. When Colby coerces him into a major robbery one night, Chad is faced with a choice that will change his life forever. With the law cracking down on the clan, Colby tightening his grip on the family, and prejudices among the local populace becoming ever more hostile, Chad discovers that his destiny may no longer lie in his own hands…

Press Reactions

Allan Hunter for Screen

The way Adam Smith immerses us in this world echoes the work of Andrea Arnold or Shane Meadows but he adds his own muscular signature in the staging of car chases and robberies and uses Edu Grau’s images of countryside and landscape to add a layer of lyricism to the events. There are also welcome touches of black humour and the surreal in Siddons’ screenplay that come as welcome relief to the darker, fatalistic mood that prevails.

The bottom line

Trespass Against Us is produced by Potboiler Productions and backed by Film4. The film will be distributed in the UK by Lionsgate and A24 Films in America, and will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2016.
