Free Fire

Cillian Murphy, Michael Smiley, Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley and Brie Larson star in Ben Wheatley's Film4-backed thriller.

Set in Boston in the late seventies, a woman (Brie Larson) has brokered a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two Irishmen (Cillian Murphy and Michael Smiley) and a gang led by two men (Armie Hammer and Sharlto Copley) who are selling them a stash of guns. But when shots are fired during the handover, a heart-stopping game of survival ensues.

Press Reactions

Owen Gleiberman for Variety

Crosses the irreverent cheekiness of Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs” with the ruthless spirit of 1970s B-movies, in which audiences hoped for a few minutes of what “Free Fire” sustains for the better part of 90 minutes.

Kevin Jagernauth for The Playlist

A shoot-em-up with a wide streak of wicked humor, coupled with no shortage of bullets and blood, marking [Ben Wheatley’s] most purely popcorn and wildly enjoyable movie to date.

Wendy Ide for Screen International

To describe Ben Wheatley’s latest picture as a blast doesn’t even come close to capturing the film’s adrenalised assault on the senses. The arms deal gone beyond bad premise paves the way for a sustained and unrelenting blitzkrieg of action.

Phil Brown for Dorkshelf

It’s a masterclass of characterization, suspense, and violence without a frame wasted.
