Review

With BBC funding, this adaptation of an 18th-century play will find its natural habitat on the box one Sunday night. Not that the elegant settings, costumes and photography or the quality of the acting are anything to carp about - but why make a film at 90 minutes offering nothing exceptional in its portrait of the hypocritical nouveau riche and the fading aristocracy? True it's taken a further 200 years and they remain with us. Hawthorne makes a decent stab at the aristo, while Spall and Collins are suitably obnoxious as the duo trying to marry off his daughter until a clandestine affair intrudes.
