The sleeper hit of 1999, helped by a brilliant marketing campaign that cleverly used the Internet, is a work whose surface artlessness conceals a sophisticated and meticulously conceived and crafted piece of psychological horror.

We know before the film starts that things will end very badly. The movie purports to be the record of a weekend trip undertaken by three students to some woodland in Maryland to investigate the myth of the eponymous witch.

The three were never seen again and all that survived was this film.

They are an ordinary threesome who bicker and gripe and gradually fall apart as they are confronted night after night by the evil forces that surround them.

The film achieves something truly rare - it is a work of cinéma vérité that is genuinely realistic. The dialogue between the three characters, whether scripted or improvised, is blandly life-like. The camera work is authentically shaky.

The effect of the film with its astonishing, deceptively inconclusive climax is shattering.
