Pretty but dull movie based on Esther Freud's semi-autobiographical novel of heading off into Morocco as a hippy young mum in the early 70s
A film that's attractive to look at, but then even a poor cameraman, let alone the talented one employed, can make Morocco appear fascinating - simply because it is. The soundtrack (not the dialogue) is okay, too. And it's notable as the last movie appearance of the once magical Clémenti. But that's it. There's little else of interest in this self-conscious, prissy and tedious film which is inbred with a sense of theatre.
Winslet plays Julia, who drags her two kids from grim London to sunny North Africa in search of a better way of life. She gets a boyfriend. Derived from Esther Freud's semi-autobiographical novel, it presents a dull life amid colourful surroundings
