David Lynch's refusal to spoon-feed his audience with story or meaning is typified in this, his best movie since Blue Velvet.
Bill Pullman plays Fred Madison, an unhappy, impotent saxophonist who kills his wife, Renee (Arquette), and is sentenced to death. But in his cell he morphs into young stud Pete Dayton (Getty), is released and starts a dangerous affair with the girlfriend of thug Mr Eddy (Loggia). And who's the girlfriend, you've guessed it - Arquette, now called Alice.
Recalling the disjointed terror of Eraserhead and Blue Velvet's surreal noir, Lost Highway finds Lynch at his most enigmatic. The film features some of the most supremely atmospheric moments in modern cinema, as the camera lurks around Fred's house and figures move in and out of shadow.
