Three Colours: Blue

Three Colours: Blue

Synopsis

An extraordinary film. The first in Kieslowski's acclaimed Three Colours trilogy is cerebral yet compelling, looks and sounds superb, and features a mesmerising performance from Juliette Binoche

About

The first part of Kieslowski's acclaimed trilogy. Each part takes a different colour of the French flag for its title and, for its theme, a different aspect of the French revolutionary rallying cry, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.

Julie seeks freedom from the past after her husband dies in a car crash. She leaves her country house to live alone in Paris. Retreating from the outside world, she discovers liberty isn't a simple matter of being free from commitment and is forced to confront her husband's infidelities.

Binoche is here at her most mesmerising and subtle as the complex and compassionate Julie, who struggles to come to terms with her jealousy and grief. Overflowing with imagery and sequences of stunning resonance the film is a visual poem.
