Review

If you believe what you see in the movies American high schools are a hotbed of naughty hi-jinks in a way that 'Grange Hill' never was, and Porky's is the film which, more than any other, established the template subsequently exploited by everything from American Pie to Sex Drive.

Like all the best dumb movies, director Bob Clark's comedy cuts straight to the chase, which in this case is a race between six 1950s Florida lemons desperate to pop their cherries. Tormented by authority and teased by the local girls, the virginal high schoolers attempt to relieve their frustration by taking a trip to a bar where the owner, Porky himself (Chuck Mitchell), is said to be able to procure a prostitute.

Naturally, it doesn't happen and the boys find themselves ripped off and then lost in a swamp. Blackmail and revenge ensue, but Clark's film isn't about the plot. It's about buoyed-up, beered-up locker-room banter and being obsessed with sex, which represents the film's terrifying Holy Grail.

It ain't big and it doesn't want us to think it's clever, but it does come loaded with libidinous energy and Clark, who made the terrifying Black Christmas in 1974, delivers some rude 'n' crude laughs along the way.

Also keep an eye out for a young Kim Cattrall, who demonstrates that even in 1981 she knew all about sex, though here it's a noisy encounter in the locker room rather than a seductive liaison in the city.

Verdict

Young, dumb and - well, you get the picture.
