Deep Throat

Deep Throat

Synopsis

Landmark porno film that achieved fleeting respectability in 1970s America. Linda Lovelace stars as a woman with a clitoris in her throat

About

In the early 70s, at the fag end of free love, mainstream cinema briefly flirted with hardcore pornography. Deep Throat is a seminal example of this fad, being the tale of Linda (Lovelace) who seems to be unable to achieve sexual satisfactory. Dr Young (Reems) discovers the cause of her troubles: her clitoris is located at the back of her throat. He advises her that she will only attain sexually fulfilled by administering oral sex to men with almost impractically large cocks, a prescription he briskly takes advantage of. Cue explicit fellatio and some humour (Linda: "How would you feel if your balls were in your ear?", Dr Young, "Why, then I could hear myself coming!).

Knocked up in six days, Deep Throat has the camerawork of a lumbering gorilla and a premise that, though initially lauded as being a breakthrough for feminism as it focused upon female pleasure, now belongs to the category of pitiful blokey humour. Although, at the time, Lovelace mouthed this feminist position, her subsequent autobiographies vented her true feelings, compiling vociferous complaints about the abusive porno culture, entirely justified when you consider her debut film was Dog Fucker.

A landmark in pornography, Deep Throat has little intrinsic merits, especially when compared to writer-director Damiano's subsequent The Devil In Miss Jones which explored the mainstream potential of porno with a more considered approach to filmmaking.
