Hawaii

About

Von Sydow plays a stern missionary spreading the word in 19th-century Hawaii while struggling to prevent wife Andrews's affections from straying towards salty skipper Harris. This was originally Fred Zinnemann's pet project, but Hill replaced him at the helm before filming commenced. He fights a losing battle to keep the sprawling story in check but, aided by his cast, imbues the piece with the stormy passion that this mammoth production requires.

Cast & Connections

  • Actor: Max Von Sydow, Gene Hackman, Jocelyne LaGarde, Richard Harris, Julie Andrews, Carroll O'Connor
  • Director: George Roy Hill
  • Writer: Dalton Trumbo, Daniel Taradash
  • Producer: Walter Mirisch
  • Photographer: Russell Harlan
  • Composer: Elmer Bernstein

In a nutshell

Hill went on to direct Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting and (bizarrely) Slap Shot, before retiring from the industry to teach drama at Yale.
