It has certainly not achieved this status because of the undernourished formulaic screenplay. What it does have over its rival Elvis vehicles, is a leading lady to match him in Ann-Margret, as the swimming instructor the hero falls for, a few well-staged numbers, including the title song and 'The Yellow Rose of Texas', and the glitzy city as background. It is all handled ably by that veteran of the MGM musical, Sidney.
