Review
Gary Cooper declined a role opposite Dietrich in this von Sternberg spy drama. Just as well since it offers little to anyone except its star. She plays X-27, described in the pre-credit note as someone who 'might have been the greatest spy in history had she not been a woman'. Dietrich has a great time as a prostitute set up in a mansion and working for the Austrian Secret Service during the Great War. She ends up being shot but not without having had some high adventures along the way. Von Sternberg wrote the story, and co-photographed, directed and edited the movie.
Verdict
Not the greatest of the several collaborations between Dietrich and Von Sternberg, but it's stylishly put together, and Dietrich's presence compensates for the script's deficiencies.
