She, A Chinese is the debut feature from Xiaolu Guo and won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival 2009

Mei is a young Chinese woman raised in a remote rural area with few prospects where she longs for a new life. Her bold escape takes her first to urban China, where she finds love, but when her hopes are dashed, she travels to England.

Filmmaker and novelist Xiaolu Guo (How Is Your Fish Today, A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary For Lovers) has followed a trajectory from China to the UK herself, lending Mei's experiences a personal resonance. Themes of identity, alienation and immigration suffuse this multi-cultural story, told with first-hand freshness. PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish provides the original score.

She, A Chinese is screening at the ICA 26 Feb - 18 Mar 2010.
